Maluso — Philippines

Weaving center and cultural program for the Sama-Bajau in Maluso

Area — Education

Beneficiaries — 16 families and the Sama-Bajau community

The Bajau community of Sitio Teheman, Maluso, and Basilan in the Philippines is a marginalized and impoverished group facing numerous challenges, including limited access to quality education and healthcare.

Despite these hardships, they have a rich cultural heritage, with traditional weaving playing a central role in their identity. The goal of this project is to empower Bajau weavers and preserve their cultural heritage by transforming an abandoned building into a cultural and livelihood center. There are three main activities in this project: renovation of the abandoned building, livelihood support and support for cultural and educational programs.

By turning an abandoned building into a cultural and livelihood center, this initiative aims to strengthen the Bajau community, preserve its rich heritage, and address its socio-economic challenges. It represents an opportunity for positive change and lasting improvement in a marginalized community.

Each initiative has reinforced our admiration for their dedication, professionalism, and unwavering commitment to community empowerment.

This project preserves the rich cultural heritage of the Sama-Bajau people while uplifting their status in society. Dr Anton Lim
