Support for children with cognitive or motor disabilities

Area — Special projects

Beneficiaries — 95 children

The deepening humanitarian crisis in Venezuela is disproportionately affecting children, especially in terms of health, mobility, and overall well-being. Many children with cognitive and motor disabilities lack access to essential mobility aids, which greatly limits their autonomy and quality of life.  In this new phase of its program, Chamos aims to extend its support to 95 children with cognitive or motor disabilities. The organization is distributing both standard pediatric wheelchairs and specialized models. In addition, the comprehensive approach includes training caregivers in home-based physiotherapy and wheelchair adjustment techniques in accordance with WHO guidelines.

With the support of a local partner, the program reaches children nationwide—from urban centers to the most remote regions. Chamos works closely with local networks and community organizations to ensure efficient distribution and proper follow-up with the wheelchairs.  By providing pediatric wheelchairs and specialized caregiver training, the project seeks to enhance the autonomy and mobility of these children, empowering them to participate more actively in their communities and daily lives. This increased independence is expected to boost their physical and emotional well-being by offering greater freedom of movement and reinforced self-confidence.

Partnership between Give a Hand and Chamos

Following last year’s successful collaboration between Chamos and Give a Hand—focused on improving nutrition for infants and mothers in Venezuela—we are excited to expand our impact to enhance the quality of life for children with disabilities.  The work done with these children perfectly aligns with Give a Hand’s mission to provide resources that promote health and support the development of vulnerable children.

Through this initiative, we are committed to providing much-needed pediatric and specialised wheelchairs to underserved communities.

Chamos

Founded in 2007, Chamos is dedicated to improving the well-being of Venezuelan children through a variety of initiatives. The organization invests in projects related to medical assistance, water supply, sanitation and hygiene, as well as education, ensuring that children have the opportunities they deserve for a happy and healthy life. Since 2019, Chamos has developed and managed, in collaboration with local partners, a specialized program dedicated to the distribution and adjustment of pediatric wheelchairs for children from underprivileged backgrounds. To date, 470 wheelchairs have been provided, benefiting children with an average age of 9—most of whom had never before had access to a wheelchair. Through this initiative, we are committed to providing much-needed pediatric and specialised wheelchairs to underserved communities. This program has a significant impact on improving the quality of life for those affected, particularly in regions where access to such essential equipment is extremely limited or non-existent. With the support of your organisation, we believe we can expand the program's reach and help even more individuals in need.
